The English Speech Poster

Hey everyone, let's break the ice. Today we are talking about one of the most annoying but also most fun things: speaking English.

Think about it. When you enter a foreign country, the first thing you see isn't a beautiful sunset or a cute dog. It's a sign that says "Great Wall". No, wait, that's not right. It's just the people looking at each other with confusion. It's that awkward silence where nobody knows how to say something funny.

I had a time like that. I was at a restaurant in Tokyo, and the waiter was asking a very simple question: "Do you like Japanese food?" My brain felt like it was running on empty batteries. I tried to speak, but I sounded like a robot. "Yes"? "No"? "Affirmative"? I was stuck in my own sentence structure. It felt like an obstacle course. But then, I remembered the advice. We don't need to be perfect. We just need to try.

What is the hardest part?

It's not grammar. It's not vocabulary. The hardest part is actually just being nervous. You know that feeling when you can't think of a third word to describe your feelings? It’s the "Third Word" problem.

Take a look at this number. If you think of a fear, you usually get an idea for "scare". But what about "very bothering"? What about "super scary"? What about "extra scary"? Can you actually list them all? You will end up with a bunch of synonyms, like "horror", "terrible", "awful", "nightmare". Wait, "horror" was used! That's not an English sentence. That's just a list of opposites. It's so hard to construct a new sentence when you are just thinking. It feels like you have to write in a foreign language just to think in English.

It's like trying to climb a mountain with only one hand. You can't hold the rope, and you don't know where the handland is. It's physically impossible if you don't practice.

So, how do we fix it? We don't fix it. We just laugh. We laugh at our own mistakes. If I say "I don't like apples" five times in a row, I’ve got a mouthful. So I laugh. It’s a relief. It’s like a headband. You feel lighter.

And here is the funny part. When I finally managed to get the sentence together, nobody laughed at me. They were like, "Oh, that's great!" My mouth dropped. I didn't expect that. I thought I had to suffer in silence. But it turns out, speaking English is very loud. It's very public. You have to look at the faces of everyone around you. It's a performance art.

Final Thoughts

Lately, people keep saying "English is not for everyone". I disagree. English is a tool. It’s like a hammer. If you need to build a house, you use the hammer. If you need to build a spaceship, you use the atomizer. You don't say "I can't use a hammer". You say "I don't have a hammer" and you do nothing. That's how people stop learning.

Speaking English is about connecting. It’s about finding a friend in London or Paris or New York. It’s about finding people with similar stories. When I speak, I don't just want to test my brain. I want to make them feel comfortable too. I want to make them laugh, or at least smile. When you speak, you invite a conversation. It sounds simple, but it changes everything.

So, here is my challenge for next week. Go out. Just talk. Don't worry about pronunciation. Don't worry about vocabulary. Just try to sound like someone. Not a robot. Not a stereotypical foreigner. Just a normal person trying to connect. If you do that, you will find that English is not about being an expert. It's about being human.

"Language is a mirror. The grammar of your life reflects back to you."
